About Us

The Scottish National Party (SNP) is the largest political party in Scotland and the third largest political party in the UK. They currently have over 110,000 members which is astonishingly, roughly one in forty of the adult population of Scotland. The main aim of the SNP is for Scotland to become an Independent country.

We are the Edinburgh Western Branch of the SNP. Prior to the Referendum the branch had 218 members, now 6 months later the branch has over 1200 members.

Edinburgh Western is the name given to the constituency in the Scottish Parliament Elections. In the UK General Elections the constituency is called Edinburgh West. For the Local Council Elections the Constituency consists of three Local Council Wards: Corstorphine/Murrayfield, Drumbrae/Gyle and Almond.

Edinburgh West/Western currently has three Local Councillors (Frank Ross (Corstorphine/Murrayfield), Norman Work (Almond), Claire Bridgman (Drumbrae/Gyle)).

Edinburgh West – UK Parliament Constituency

Edinburgh West is a burgh constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (at Westminster), first used in the 1885 general election. It elects one Member of Parliament by the first past the post system of election. This constituency, was a Unionist/Conservative seat for over 65 years, from the 1931 general election until the 1997 general election; since then the seat has been held by the Liberal Democrats up until the 7th of May 2015 when Michelle Thomson won the seat for the SNP.

Edinburgh Western – Scottish Parliament Constituency

Edinburgh Western is a constituency of the Scottish Parliament (Holyrood). It elects one Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) by the plurality (first past the post) method of election. Also, however, it is one of nine constituencies in the Lothian electoral region, which elects seven additional members, in addition to nine constituency MSPs, to produce a form of proportional representation for the region as a whole.

The seat is currently held by Colin Keir of the SNP from the 2011 election. Elections for the Scottish Parliament take place every four years and are due to be held on Thursday 5 May 2016. The Branch’s objective in the 2016 election is to hold the seat with an increased majority.

Edinburgh Western – Council Election Wards

The 2012 Scottish local elections, were held on 3 May, in all 32 local authorities. The Scottish National Party (SNP) overtook Labour to win the highest share of the vote, and retained and strengthened its position as the party with most councillors. The elections are based on the the Single Transferable Vote system. The next Scottish local elections will take place in 2017, on Thursday 4 May.

Three council wards are covered by the area, the SNP have one councillor in each ward and these are: Almond( Norman Work), Drumbrae/Gyle( Ronald Cairns ) and Corstorphine Murrayfield( Frank Ross). N.B. there’s three council seats in each Ward.

Scottish European Elections

Scotland constitutes a single constituency of the European Parliament. In 2014 it elected six MEPs, using the d’Hondt method of party-list proportional representation. The SNP gained the highest number of votes. The table below shows the results from the election, the elected MEPs are in the large bold blue print. The two SNP MEPs are Ian Hudghton and Alyn Smith.
